What Singapore mums really want this Mother’s Day

Mums in Singapore would appreciate flowers and chocolates this Mother’s Day. But there’s one thing they’d like more — a simple “thank you” from their children.

That’s according to the first-ever survey commissioned by consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble to measure attitudes of gratitude towards mums across 12 countries in Asia.

Although 40 per cent of mums surveyed in Singapore said they would most like to get those simple words of thanks on that day, only 29 per cent said they had ever received them then.

Conducted by independent research agency Ipsos, the survey showed that nearly 90 per cent of respondents in the country agreed that their mums have sacrificed much for them.

This awareness made Singapore stand out in the region.

Compared to the 44 per cent average of 3,000 respondents region-wide that said mums deserved to be appreciated every day, a far greater number – 61 per cent of the respondents – in the city-state said so.

Still, 57 per cent of the respondents in the Singapore survey were infrequent in expressing their appreciation of their mothers.

But there was a hard core group made up of 16 per cent of respondents that said they thanked their mums every day.

Giving mums “something she likes” was what 56 per cent of Singapore respondents said was the best thing done on Mother’s Day, though only 18 per cent of the mums surveyed wanted a gift.

At the end of the day, though, mum will understand.

Take it from Napisah d/o Mohamed Yusoff, mother of national shooter Aqilah Binte Suhir.

She pointed out, “As mums, it brings us joy to spend most of our time caring for our children and bringing them up without expecting any reward.”
