Wife of Florida shooting suspect arrested for perjury

The wife of the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second degree murder for shooting dead an unarmed black teenager was arrested herself Tuesday for giving false testimony about her husband's finances.

"Shellie Zimmerman (25) was arrested about 3:30 pm at the location she was residing in Seminole County. She was booked on a perjury charge, with bond set at $1,000. She is currently in the process of posting bond," a sheriff's spokeswoman told AFP.

George Zimmerman, 28, the watch volunteer who returned to jail June 3, shot Trayvon Martin dead on February 26 as the 17-year-old was returning from a run to a local store in Sanford, Florida to buy a drink and some candy.

A judge earlier revoked George Zimmerman's bail after prosecutors argued that he had misled the court about having no money when tens of thousands of dollars were sitting in online fundraising accounts. He will have a new bond hearing June 29.

The high-profile race case sparked protests across the United States in March and April as anger spread over the delay in pressing charges against Zimmerman, who insists he shot in self-defense and was within his rights under Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law.
