A 39-year-old female Malaysian motorcyclist has been arrested allegedly for smuggling drugs into Singapore by hiding them in her underwear.

On Wednesday at 6.00am, the woman, who was travelling alone, was stopped for checks at Woodlands Checkpoint, the Immigrations and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) said in a statement.

During checks, female officers from ICA noticed the woman was wearing two layers of undergarments.

Upon closer examination, the ICA officers found three bundles on her, each wrapped with black tapes. The bundles contained about 950g of heroin, 34g of “Ice” and 500 Erimin-5 tablets – a haul estimated to be worth more than $109,000.

The woman has been handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigations. If she is convicted for drug importation, she may face the death penalty.

In November last year, rulings for drugs offences were tweaked. Drug couriers who cooperate with authorities in a “substantive way”, aside from meeting other conditions, may face life imprisonment instead of the death penalty.
