Working overtime could boost risk for major depressive episode

Regularly working long hours in the office might increase your risk of a serious depressive episode, according to a new study.

According to findings published in the journal PloS ONE on Wednesday, people who regularly work 11 hours or more each day are more than twice as likely to experience a major episode of depression than colleagues who stick with an eight-hour work day.

Researchers from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and Queen Mary University of London examined records of more than 2,000 London-based white-collar workers in a five-year study. None of the recruits had a recent history of depression when they were enrolled in the study.

Those who worked 11 hours or more each day were between 2.3 and 2.5 times more likely to develop a major depressive episode than those who worked seven-to-eight-hour days. Researchers controlled for other factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and general health.

"Long working hours don't just affect us because of the pressure and intensity of work itself, they affect us because we don't have enough time for all the other things we need for good mental health, such as good quality sleep, relationships, and opportunities for rest and exercise," Paul Farmer, chief executive of leading British mental health charity Mind, told WebMD. "Every time we squeeze more work in, many of us will be squeezing something else out.

While other studies have been done on work hours and depression, "results have not been conclusive because there is no standardized benchmark for what constitutes a 'normal' working day," reports WebMD.

A previous study by the same researchers, which also relied on the same database of London-based workers, found that overtime was linked with a 60 percent increase in coronary heart disease.

yes.its depressing, especially, if even off days, you received a call from your boss, asking you to come at the office early FRI mornings (Middle East). Overtime , should be done by employee, voluntarily, hindi ipinipilit.

thanks for this article. now i know why my health is severely affected. doing the functions of 3 people alone and trying to run the office alone is no fun. i have to bring home work because the 8 hrs is not enough. spending for the operational expenses of the office on ur own salary is no no fun at all. worse, i feel so tired i only sit at the computer not doing work anymore but playing games at pc. worst, i cannot even take a leave if am sick. i only file a leave on paper but still has to go to work coz there is nobody to man the office. in effect, performance is affected, morale is low. i hope we can hire more people coz we are understaffed. PNOY..please help!!!

i work 12 hours a day and i do agree with the author. there is more to life than working over time however, work is a blessing that needs to be kept. its just a matter of time management, i guess

working overtime so that the company would pay high? but never do the tasks during the 8 hour regular working hours... so terrible... I don't think this kind of person is sincere....she's not helping the company at all. If all the employees are like this the company would surely go bankrupt. I'm referring to my co-workers.

I feel for this article. Most of the time I work for 12 hours and yet the management tends to overlook this kind of situation. It's sad sometimes that the management is too driven to achieve their goals (result oriented) without compromising the employees' situation. 'work life balance' must be establish in the organization. As Peter Drucker said the employees are the major asset of the organization.

The mere thought of overtime is already depressing. After looking at today's housing plans and their prices depressing as well. Realizing that your overtimes wont get you any higher, not even close to achieving those housing plans you've seen is just one of the most depressing moments in life.. it makes you cry, literally :(

What will you gain if all that will eventually be spent on medical treatments? Save your soul -by working hard to finish your work on time and avoid OTs if possible.

I agree with this article. I developed an heart ailment due to working almost 15 to 16 hours a day with addition to the travel time I make to/from work, but practicality speaking I must go on doing overtime in order for my salary be consumerate for my family's basic needs.

Akala mo lang mas naghihirap ka kaysa sa boss mo, pero pera ng boss mo ang nawawala everytime may nangyayari sa kompanya. Mas malaki nga kita niya, pero mas malaking burden pnoproblema niyan pag uwi.
