'M*A*S*H' vs. 'The Monkees': Vote for the Best TV Theme Songs

The 4077th takes on the Pre-Fab Four in Round 3 of Yahoo! TV's Theme Song Thunderdome.

With March Madness in full swing, we decided to do a TV-themed bracket of our own: a no-holds-barred tournament to determine the best TV theme song of all time. After lots of heated debate, we've selected and ranked 32 of the most memorable TV theme songs ever, pitting them against each other in a winner-takes-all bracket. Over the next few weeks, we're asking you to vote for your favorite theme songs until we get a winner -- and a few songs stuck in your heads.

(2) "M*A*S*H" ("Suicide Is Painless")

It's been a pretty painless run through the bracket so far for the doctors and nurses of the 4077th, as they smashed "The Simpsons" in Round 2 without breaking a sweat. Of course, the melancholy melody to "Suicide Is Painless" is one of the most distinctive in TV history, setting the proper tone for 11 seasons' worth of Korean War dramedy. But though it's a classic, it's not exactly a fun tune to sing along to, is it? That leads us to…

(11) "The Monkees"

… the irrepressible "Monkees" theme song, which shocked us last round by sending early favorite "The Golden Girls" to Davy Jones' locker. We shouldn't be too shocked, though: The peppy early-Beatles verve of this track still gets our heads bobbing nearly a half-century later. And we actually think the Monkees have a shot at taking down "M*A*S*H" here as well. As inarguably great as "Suicide Is Painless" is, it's definitely a downer, and the pure fun factor of the "Monkees" theme might mean we'll see them monkeying around in the Final Four.
