'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' vs. 'The X-Files': Vote for the Best TV Theme Songs

With March Madness in full swing, we decided to do a TV-themed bracket of our own: a no-holds-barred tournament to determine the best TV theme song of all time. After lots of heated debate, we've selected and ranked 32 of the most memorable TV theme songs ever, pitting them against each other in a winner-takes-all bracket. Over the next few weeks, we're asking you to vote for your favorite theme songs until we get a winner -- and a few songs stuck in your heads.

(7) "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" ("Love Is All Around")

Mary had to throw her hat to something, right? Much has been written about this beloved opening -- down to the detail of its Peignot font, natch -- and rightfully so. The images, which varied from season to season, clearly inspired credits sequences down the road, including "Sex and the City." The theme's lyrics specifically told the tale of its main character, Mary Richards, surviving the end of a relationship and starting from scratch. Needless to say, affirming words like "You're gonna make it after all" inspired more than just a comedic character.

(10) "The X-Files"

That famous whistle sound (we know it's in your head from just reading this headline) created the perfect, ominous feeling to launch every episode of this now-classic sci-fi mystery show. The tones, inspired by the Smiths song "How Soon Is Now," along with the images of various supernatural elements, paved the way for intros to shows like "Fringe." In other words, we have a battle of the trailblazers on our hands here.
