Popular halal buffet restaurant 1 Market by Chef Wan has closed permanently, according to media reports on Wednesday (29 June).

The 450-seat eatery helmed by the famous Malaysian chef at 1 Market had reportedly been closed since last Sunday (26 June). It first opened its doors in November 2012.

Owned by food court chain operator Food Junction Management, the restaurant was known for its buffet spread of signature Southeast Asian dishes.

Food Junction general manager Jeffrey Lim said that they were “unable to sustain” the business due to “higher operating expenses”, according to The New Paper.

Chef Wan himself told BERITAMediacorp that the food was not prepared as how he had demonstrated to the chefs, who went ahead to “do as they please”.

“When I heard what happened there, I got quite angry,” he was quoted as saying.

Criticism from Singapore foodies

The restaurant had been receiving numerous negative reviews at least in the last three months, mainly related to the poor quality of its food and service.

Most of the reviews were posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“Crabs not fresh, all mushy. And who serves whole crab cut in half and leave the gills inside?” said a Raymond Choy.

“First and the last time I’ll be going to One Market. Firstly, the whole place was poorly maintained, the aircon vents were very dusty and the floor smelled bad. Secondly the service horrible…” said a Shawn Tan.
