The New #1 Movie on Netflix Is Seriously Chilling

First, it was Enola Holmes. Then it was Bad Teacher. And now, Netflix just crowned another top ranked movie.

Introducing American Murder: The Family Next Door, a true-crime documentary that examines the infamous Watts family murders. Although the movie premiered on Netflix this week, it’s already skyrocketed to the number one spot on the streaming service’s list of most watched flicks.

So, what’s the hype about? American Murder uses never-before-seen archival footage to depict what happened. This includes social media posts, law enforcement recordings, text messages and home videos that weren’t previously released to the public.

The tragic story took place in 2018 when Christopher Lee Watts killed his pregnant wife, Shanann, and two children in their Colorado home. He thought he had gotten away with it—that is, until a friend reported Shanann missing. Watts later confessed to the murders during an interview with law enforcement, creating a media frenzy surrounding the trial.

American Murder: The Family Next Door not only offers a different perspective, but it also highlights Watts’s shocking transition from grieving husband to coldblooded killer.

The movie was directed by Jenny Popplewell (Gypsy Kids Our Secret World). Emma Comans (One Night in Istanbul), Hayley Ford (First Dates), James R.M. Hunt (My Generation), James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) and Jonathan Stadlen (The Secret World of Your Rubbish) served as executive producers.

Sounds right up our true-crime-loving alley.
