10,000 participate in vibrant Merdeka celebration in KK

KOTA KINABALU: Up to 10,000 people took part in the vibrant state-level National Day celebration here today.

As early as 6.30am, 149 contingents were already in position along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens for the march past ceremony.

They comprised representatives from schools, higher learning institutions, private and commercial sector enterprises, non-governmental organisations, ethnic associations, and government bodies.

Present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and his wife Datin Shuryani Shuaib, Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Jaujan Sambakong, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and Christina Liew, and cabinet ministers.

The three-hour celebration also saw a choral performance by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall; SM Tshung Tshin Sabah's Chim Vui Lung reading a poem entitled "Sayangi Malaysia Kita"; and a special performance by the Sabah Cultural Board, among others.

State Infrastructure Development minister Datuk Peter Anthony, who is also the celebration’s organising chairperson, presented certificates and prizes to winners of the parade. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bahang was crowned champions for the secondary school category; Komander Kesatria UiTM Sabah (higher learning institutions); Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (private sector); the Girls Brigade Malaysia Association Sabah chapter (non-governmental organisation); and Sabah Bangsa Tombonuo Association (Sabah ethnic associations).

As for the non-uniformed government department category, first place went to the Public Works department; while the Sandakan municipal council won for the uniformed government department category. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
