10 best desserts in Singapore that happiness can’t buy

Can all my sweet tooth maniacs raise your hands? I myself am guilty of indulging in an endless amount of dessert after every meal. No matter how full you are, there will always be space for dessert. The thing is, the dessert scene has been getting more and more saturated and most of the time I’m caught in a dilemma of where to go next. Stressed?

Not to worry, the opposite of ‘stressed’ is desserts. So I’ve got it covered with 10 best places in Singapore to savour sweet treats that’ll leave your tummy happy. The list will go from multiple ice cream parlours to interesting mash ups of traditional desserts, so save some room as you might want them all!

1. Apiary

Apiary 1

First on the list would be the crowd favourite. The delicious and classic pairing of ice cream and waffles for dessert is never a miss. Apiary is the popular ice cream cafe that opened up in Tanjong Pagar that attracted a long queue of customers.

What’s attractive is probably their stretch of interesting flavours such as Blue Milk (S$4.20), Apiary (S$4.70) and It’s Tiger Time (a beer-flavoured sorbet) (S$4.70). Their handmade ice cream with natural and fresh ingredients is easily enjoyed in other forms on a brownie or in a cone as well!

When it comes to choosing brownies or waffles at Apiary, I really cannot make up my mind. Their Brownies (S$8) are served warm and fudgy, almost reminiscent of a chocolate cake! While their Waffles with Brown Butter (S$6) are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, it is always a safe choice to have.

2. Ah Chew Desserts

If you’re thinking of traditional desserts, Ah Chew Desserts is one that should immediately come to mind. It is the traditional dessert haven that serves over 50 differing kinds— pick whatever to your fancy, I am sure you’ll find something.

Yam paste with Gingko (S$3.30) is a mandatory order for many. That’s because taro and sweet potato are hot favourite flavours in desserts because of its natural sweetness and earthy flavour. Ah Chew’s orh nee has a thick consistency with tiny yam bits inside, as a surprise factor. So comforting, but super yum as well.

3. Plain Vanilla

Where do I get a good cupcake in Singapore? Undoubtedly, Plain Vanilla has been triumphing in the cupcake sector.

I remember how those iconic brown boxes tied with a stringy ribbon (that they still use today) used to flood my Instagram page back in the early 2010s. These were the trendy, aesthetic cupcakes that people were raving about. Since then, they have been touted to have the best cupcakes in Singapore.

Their cupcakes are available from S$4.20. From Vanilla Bean to Strawberry White Chocolate to Salted Caramel, their flavour profiles are impeccable. My personal favourite would be the Cinnamon Brown Sugar— simple and sweet! If you’re spoilt for choice, just settle for A Box of 6 (S$26).

Now, they’ve opened several outlets all across Singapore, curating a space with influences of earthy tones and natural lighting — a relaxing place for friends to chatter over cakes, donuts, or a cup of coffee. All their cafes are as Instagram-worthy as the Tiong Bahru outlet— don’t you remember the distinct Tiffany blue bicycle and hand-strung swing by their entrance that literally everyone took photos at?

4. Tian Wang 甜旺

Tian Wang 1

It’s late, and you’re thinking of having dessert after drinks? Tian Wang is a place you have to visit.

Open in central Singapore, Jalan Besar, the traditional dessert shop is the neighbour of the popular dim sum spot, Swee Choon. Open till 3am, this mahjong-themed dessert cafe not only opens till the wee hours of the morning, they also do up fantastic dessert options.

Tian Wang 2

Durian lovers, prepare yourself. Till date, their Durian Mango Pomelo Sago (S$10.80) is one of my favourite indulgences.

Including a heaping scoop of fresh mao shan wang flesh, the definition of triple kill is right in this bowl of bitter-sweet goodness. Think large chunks of sweet, juicy mangoes, paired with an unusual combination of bitter-sweet flavours from the mao shan wang and tanginess from the pomelo pulps. Yup, that’s probably the dessert of your dreams.

5. The Awfully Chocolate Bakery and Cafe

Awfully Chocolate 1

The launch of Awfully Chocolate Bakery and Cafe excited me when they first came up. Serving up a spectrum of contemporary dishes, live-bake pastries and the first ever chocolate temper station, you’ll be living your Charlie and The Chocolate Factory dreams over here.

Awfully Chocolate 2

They have different types of chocolate (45% dark milk, 60% dark or 70% dark chocolate) that you can add to your Hot Chocolate (S$8)— the ultimate chocolate experience. Not only that, with the temper station, douse a layer of chocolate over the pastry of your choice here and you’ll be amazed by how it transcends each pastry. The gorgeous Chocolate Croissant (S$7) is doused with 70% dark chocolate, fresh from their taps!

For all you chocolate fans, order a Super Stacked Chocolate Cake (S$7.90), Nutella Tart (S$8.90), or White Chocolate Creme Brulee (S$8.90)— the list of chocolate variables is endless.

6. 75 Ah Balling

Old-school desserts are always the best. Their price tags too. Since young, I’ve always loved eating tang yuan because of how each rice ball would surprise me with its different fillings of molten sesame or peanut flavours, unknowingly distinguishable from its exterior.

75 Ah Balling makes up a fantastic version. Having nearly 80 years of heritage, they have passed the baton of ownership from generation to generation. Such old-school delicacies are at risk of extinction as we go ahead with modernisation. However, they’ve opened up a few more outlets with the help of franchisors, which explains the expansion of stalls across Singapore.

Thankfully, we would be able to enjoy a spectrum of unique flavours instead of the conventional offerings of tang yuan here at 75 Ah Balling. They offer Yam, Red Bean and Matcha, apart from the usual flavours of Peanut and Sesame. Priced at low costs of S$2 for 3 pieces and S$2.90 for 6 pieces, who says that desserts are usually expensive?

7. Flor Patisserie

Flor Patisserie 1

Craving a sweet treat after your meal but you’re sick of ice cream? Try attaining one of Flor Patisserie’s decadent delights. Flor is a Portuguese word for flower, this is why you’ll see floral influences in all their bakes here.

Flor Patisserie 2

They specialise in Japanese-inspired French bakes that vary in countless flavours. Case in point: Okinawa Brown Sugar Mont Blanc, Waguri Millefeuille (S$10.80), Sour Cherry Almond Pie (S$9.50). Some of these combinations are combinations I have never heard of before. Surely creativity is something up their alley.

If you love the airiness of Japanese bakes, this place is the one for you. Maybe try getting a full cake to celebrate a birthday? They have a whole list of selections at their different outlets, Duxton Hill and East Coast Road. Fastest fingers first!

8. Sunday Folks

We should all be familiar with Sunday Folks. The quaint dessert shop that hides behind Chip Bee Gardens speaks to many with their homebakes.

Plain Vanilla 1

The spacious dessert place is perpetually packed not only on Sundays, but everyday.

Reason is because of their signature flavours: Roasted Pistachio, Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Festive 56% Dark Chocolate (this reminds me of Ferrero Rocher), and Earl Grey Lavender. Swirled beautifully on top of a waffle, a Soft serve with a single waffle will go at S$13.50. To double it up, it would be an additional S$2.80

Sunday Folks 1

Easily recognisable from their visually appealing plate presentation, you’ll find many happy customers snapping Instagram pictures of their desserts here. Their soft serves are smooth and creamy, which can be easily savoured in a second. Don’t fancy their combinations? Don’t worry, your dessert can be customisable to your preference for S$9.50.

Plain Vanilla 3

Not fancying something cold? Take a look at the sliced cakes or tarts available to all consumers. Something about their cakes just exude a sense of cosiness, be it the Warm Lavender Cake (S$9) and Tokyo Yuzu Cheesecake (S$9), or their Rich Cognac Chocolate Ganache Cake (S$9), all of them are well-loved enough for customers to order them for celebrations.

9. Rochor Original Beancurd

Tau huay can be eaten at any time of the day. It is the kind of food that you can eat as breakfast or supper, perfect for any occasion.

Rochor Original Beancurd 1

Just thinking about slurping on the warm silky beancurd already brings comfort to my stomach. Craving beancurd now? Rochor Original Beancurd has got you covered. I particularly like the pairing of cold beancurd with fried butterfly fritters, as it is a sweeter option with a sesame mixture enveloped by both sides of the “wings” of the butterfly.

Rochor Original Beancurd 2

This would be an option for those not looking for something heavy. Whether you had a light dinner or you’re looking for a light supper, this will be the one for you!

Using their recipe for 63 years, the Hot Beancurd (S$1.20) has never left a lingering taste and they have one of the smoothest bean curds out there. However, if you’re not feeling munchy, you can always opt for a drink instead! They have Soya Bean Milk (S$1.20), Grass Jelly (S$1.50), and my personal favourite of yuan yang, Soya Grass Jelly (S$1.50)

10. Creamier

Creamier 1

Last but not the least, Creamier is an ice cream cafe started in one of the oldest estates of Singapore. First opened at Toa Payoh, they went on to open more outlets in different parts of Singapore. Great for us ice cream lovers!

Creamier 2

They serve up nothing too over-the-top, with flavours like Blue Pea Vanilla, Cookies and Cream and Salted Gula Melaka (S$3.90 for a scoop, S$6.80 for double scoop). Just good ol’ ice cream that satisfies everyone.

Creamier 3

Their waffles however are one of the fluffiest ones — so if you fancy fluffy waffles over dense ones, you’re in for a treat! I mean, just step into any of their ice cream cafes and the whiff of buttery waffles will win you over. Their Waffles with a single scoop of ice cream would go for S$9.70

Fun fact: they have ice cream that is totally safe for your furkids too! Who needs a Valentine’s Day date when you can have one with your pet?
