MANILA — The military and the Abu Sayyaf Group had an encounter in Barangay Laus, Talipao, Sulu at past 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
The Abu Sayyaf Group was led by ASG leader Radullan Sahiron, subleader Hadjan Sawadjaan, who is said to have connections with the Islamic State (ISIS), and Almujer Yadah.
Ten ASG members were killed while 32 soldiers were wopunded in the clash that lasted for over an hour.
“Yung 19 [wounded military] shrapnel lang yun, meaning, we have to carry them to the hospital for the purpose na bigyan ng anti-tentanus shots at saka para malaman natin, evaluate, kasi baka mamaya mayroong unsealed injuries (The 19 [wound military personnel] sustained injuries from shrapnel. We had to carry them to the hospital for the purpose of giving them anti-tetanus shots, and for further evaluation in case there are what we call ancillary injuries),” said WESTMINCOM commander, MGen. Carlito Galvez Jr.
Four of the injured soldiers were brought to Zamboanga City and were given financial aid.
A body of an ASG member was recovered together with two high-caliber firearms.
MGen. Galvez said the ASG is currently holding Vietnamese hostages.
“Maganda ngayon nasa advantage tayo we are gaining the (ground) maintaining the pressure and hopefully we can rescue the remaining hostages kayo yung grupo na nag-hahandle ngayon may dalang hostages (We are now on the advantage.
