100 left homeless after fire razes two Sri Aman long houses


SRI AMAN: Twenty-three families lost their homes and belongings when two long houses were razed by a pre-dawn fire near Jalan Jungkong, Bukit Bakong, Lingga, about 32km from here yesterday.

According to a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, the Langaw Bakong Long House, where 15 families were living, was completely destroyed, while the Rumah Johnet Long House, housing eight families, suffered 70 per cent damage.

He said the Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 3.50am and eight firefighters, led by Alban Gayan Lembang, arrived at the scene to provide assistance.

The fire is believed to have started from the kitchen of Langaw Bakong Long House, before spreading to Rumah Johnet.

There were no casualties in the fire that left 100 homeless, except for a man who suffered slight injuries to his neck. --BERNAMA
