1,200-pound block hits 'Deadliest Catch' fisherman in the head

Deadliest Catch fisherman Hank Todd was hoping to catch crabs in the Bering Sea, but instead he caught a 1,200-pound block to the head.

Todd is a deck hand on the Brenna A fishing vessel, captained by Sean Dwyer. The seas were particularly bad during the 2017 king crab season, when this episode was filmed. The 1,200-pound block, used to pull up crabbing pots from the murky deep, is attached to the end of the crane. Bad weather and large swells made the boat, which caused the block to swing and smash the fisherman in the head.

The vicious hit knocked Todd several feet. After the other deck hands helped him to his feet, Todd initially seemed woozy. But the rugged worker told the captain he was all right, and he continued to fish.

One of the deck hands said, “You know you’re a tough crab fisherman when you get hit in the head, knocked all the way down, get right back up and keep working.”

Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Discovery.
