16 town councils formed after GE

The Ministry of National Development (MND) announced on Thursday that 16 town councils have been formed after the General Election.

Of these, two (Jalan Besar and Marsiling-Yew Tee) are newly formed, 13 are reconstituted, while Tampines remains unchanged.

Meanwhile, the town councils of Moulmein-Kallang and Potong Pasir were dissolved.

With effect from yesterday, the Jalan Besar Town Council will take over the management of areas in Potong Pasir SMC and Jalan Besar GRC.

Other areas previously managed by the Moulmein-Kallang Town Council will be managed by the town councils of Holland-Bukit Panjang, Tanjong Pagar and Bishan-Toa Payoh based on the new electoral boundaries.

Areas in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC that were previously managed by Sembawang and Chua Chu Kang town councils, will be managed by Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council with effect from 1 December 2015.

Thirteen other town councils were reconstituted as some areas under their purview became part of other towns due to changes in electoral boundaries or the grouping of constituencies for a town.

The management of these areas will be transferred to the reconstituted town councils with effect from 1 December 2015, said MND.

Notably, the town council of Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East was renamed Aljunied-Hougang, while East Coast and Jurong were renamed East Coast-Fengshan and Jurong-Clementi respectively.

Other reconstituted town councils include Bishan-Toa Payoh, Holland-Bukit Panjang, Marine Parade, Sembawang, West Coast and Tanjong Pagar.

MND said it encourages all town councils to work together to ensure a smooth transition, so that the needs of all residents can continue to be served.
