2,100 trees transplanted last year: Khaw
Some 2,100 mature trees were transplanted in Singapore last year by the National Parks Board (NParks), revealed National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
Writing on his blog, Mr Khaw said the trees had to be moved in instances such as road works or flood alleviation projects in order to save them.
He cited how many mature trees were affected by extensive road works underway in Upper Thomson Road for the upcoming Thomson MRT Line.
"We try to save every mature tree and transplantation allows us to achieve that."
Another advantage of transplanting is that it allows the greening of new roads and parks to be sped up.
Currently, NParks has more than 5,500 trees in its tree banks comprising more than 40 different species that can be transplanted.
But the task requires much skill and effort from NParks arborists who need to first assess if the trees are suitable to be transplanted, and subsequently care for and maintain the trees after the transplanting process.
Mr Khaw added that NParks will look to to deepen its greening capabilities so that Singaporeans can continue to enjoy the lush greenery.
