2 men, 3 boys plead not guilty to assaulting transgender person

SEREMBAN: Two men and three boys pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of assaulting a transgender individual.

Syaari Aziz, 37, Muhammad Haiqal Mohammad Aris, 19, and three boys, who are sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination this year, allegedly assaulted the victim with a stick and PVC pipe near a shoplot in Jalan A.S Tambaiyah 3, here.

The offence, which also involved three other suspects who are still at large, was committed at 12.15am on Aug 15.

The accused were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which could be read together with Section 34 of the same Act, for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means.

If convicted, they face a maximum jail sentence of 20 years, fine or whipping.

They pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them. Judge G. Ramesh fixed RM10,000 bail with one surety for each of the accused and set Sept 3 for remention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin prosecuted while Syaari was represented by Shahrulazwad Ismail.

Lawyer Zaidi Abdul Hamid represented Haiqal and two of the juveniles, while the third juvenile was represented by A. Partheeban.
