A bouncer who punched a nightclub patron because he thought the latter was having intimate relations with a woman he was interested in was jailed for two weeks on Tuesday (11 December).

Liaw Jian Hong, 36, pleaded guilty at the State Courts last week to one charge of causing hurt.

At about 3am on 4 November last year, Liaw, who was working at Club Aura at Orchard Hotel as a public relations manager, was on duty when he saw victim Low Yan Koon, 29, and Low’s friend Ling Wen Bin, 26. At the time, Liaw was in a drunken state.

Liaw thought he recognised Low as someone who had intimate relations with a woman he was interested in.

Feeling angry, Liaw asked Low to follow him outside the club. Liaw asked Low if he knew ‘Dada’, the woman he liked. When Low said he did, Liaw punched his nose once, causing it to bleed.

Low did not retaliate and went back into the club to look for Ling to tell him that they should leave.

Outside the club, Liaw shouted at Low and punched his face thrice, causing him to bleed from a cut on the right eyebrow.

Other club bouncers intervened while Low and Ling left. Ling called the police to say that Low had been hit by a club bouncer.

For the offence, Liaw could have been jailed up to two years and fined up to $5,000.
