2020 Geely Coolray: The 3 variants in detail

Now that 2020 is over, we may soon be crowning a new subcompact crossover king, as the current bestselling model for several months of last year is a vehicle that doesn’t come from a major automotive marque—at least, locally speaking. With only twelve dealerships nationwide to its name so far, Geely has managed to outshine the others in the compact SUV category with its offering, the hugely popular Coolray.

Launched in the country very recently in the fourth quarter of 2019, the Geely Coolray managed to enjoy immediate success. Power-wise, it relies on a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine to deliver its power to the front wheels, with power topping at 175hp and torque capping off at 255Nm. Relying on a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for shifting, the car comes in three different trims: Sport Turbo, Premium Turbo, and Comfort Turbo.

Exterior-wise, there’s plenty of American and European styling cues to behold in this Chinese-made car, beginning with the front façade that looks like it was lifted straight from the Chevrolet playbook, and on to the blacked-out pillars reminiscent of the two-tone color theme popularized by British marque MINI. Despite the various styling nods, the design elements look cohesive. Projector-type headlamps, rear diffuser, a Piano Black roof with panoramic sunroof, and a carbon-fiber front spoiler round out the Coolray’s exceptional outside features.

Inside, a black color motif permeates in the cabin, highlighted with silver and maroon (top trim only) accents that express the crossover's sporty nature excellently. Meanwhile, a hexagonal-centric theme dresses up the dash and side panels, giving the entire cabin a sophisticated contemporary look. Leather seats (top trim only), paddle shifters, and a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with QD link Android connectivity and voice control enhance the Coolray's comfort and convenience utilities, as does an e-shifter, standard cruise control, and a customizable 7-inch LCD instrument panel.

With regards to safety, apart from the standard airbags, seatbelts, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, the Coolray is also equipped with advanced safety features such as Electronic Stability and Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Geely's GPilot system that adds ease to driving. Other nifty safety additions include the Auto Parking Assistant which lets you do parallel and perpendicular parking at the a touch of a button, and four exterior cameras to give the driver a 360-degree view of the car.
