BALAKONG: The Election Commission (EC) plans to re-evaluate the feasibility of a 21-day election campaign period.
Its secretary Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar said the EC received various responses following its announcement that the campaign periods for the Balakong and Seri Setia state by-elections – which are taking place today – would be 21 days, the longest in the nation’s history.
“We gave the Sungai Kandis by-election 14 days. We gave 21 days for today’s by-elections. We will re-assess (our decision) to find a more suitable time frame.
“We also have to get feedback from the contesting candidates and parties,” Mohamed Elias told reporters after visiting the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Balakong, one of the polling centres for the Balakong by-election this morning.
He added that the EC had received no reports of election offences or violations by any quarter during the campaign period of the Balakong and Seri Setia by-elections. --Bernama © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
