22-year-old bride-to-be drowns near Setiu waterfall

SETIU: A 22-year-old woman drowned while swimming with her fiancé near the Lata Payong Recreation Park waterfalls here, yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Superintendent Burhanuddin Mustafa said the victim, Amira Diana Harun, from Kampung Bukit Nenas, Sungai Tong here, had gone to the park with her fiancé, 25-year-old soldier, Asraff Rifaie Maliki, for a picnic at around 2pm.

It is learnt that while swimming, Amira and Asraff were caught in a whirlpool near the waterfall.

Other park-goers and nearby villagers who noticed the swimmers struggling attempted to help, but their efforts proved futile when Amira disappeared.

Burhanuddin said members of the public only managed to save Rifaie during the incident.

The police received a distress call on the incident at 2.45pm.

"Rescuers rushed to the scene and conducted an operation to locate the victim.

“The victim's body was finally found at 4.30pm, washed up on rocks about two kilometres from the spot she was last seen" he added.

Burhanuddin said Amira’s remains were sent to the Setiu Hospital for a post-mortem.
