Singapore's youngest COVID fatality, 23, among single-day record of 15 deaths

SINGAPORE — A 23-year-old individual was among 15 Singaporeans reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (14 October) to have died of COVID-19.

The city-state's youngest such fatality, whose gender was not given, had been partially vaccinated against the coronavirus disease.

A 34-year-old unvaccinated person was also among the single-day high of 15 reported deaths.

Both had multiple underlying medical conditions, said the MOH.

Of the remaining 13 fatalities, aged between 60 and 89, eight had been unvaccinated and five had been fully vaccinated. All of them had various underlying medical conditions.

The eight men and seven women make up the 193rd through 207th COVID-19 deaths in Singapore. A total of 106 people here have succumbed to the disease thus far this month.

Thursday marks the 25th day in a row with fatalities from COVID-19 reported in Singapore.

A 34-year-old man from Ukraine who died on 1 August was previously Singapore's youngest such fatality.

2,932 new COVID cases, 5 clusters being monitored

The ministry also confirmed 2,932 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, bringing the country's total case count to 138,327.

Of them, 2,929 are local infections: 2,412 are in the community and 517 reside in the migrant worker dormitories. The remaining three are imported.

Among the local cases are 436 people aged above 60, said the MOH.

Five active COVID-19 clusters are being closely monitored, the ministry added. They include those at two nursing homes, one welfare home, and one preschool.

Of the list of monitored clusters, the highest number of eight new cases – all issued a health risk warning – was added to the cluster at MWS Christalite Methodist Home. The cluster now has 104 cases: 90 are residents while 14 are staff members.

Four new cases were also added to the cluster at ASPRI-Westlite Papan Dormitory, now totalling 242 infections.

Three new cases were each added to the clusters at MY World Preschool @ Hougang Dewcourt and Acacia Home, now totalling 12 and 11 infections respectively.

Of the cases at the preschool, seven are students, three are staff members and two are household contacts. Of those at the welfare home, all but two – both staff members – are residents.

One new case was added to the cluster at the St Andrew's Nursing Home's Taman Jurong branch, now totalling 11 infections. Of them, all but one – a staff member – are residents.

310 require oxygen supplementation; 46 in ICU

As of Thursday, 1,511 cases – or 7 per cent – are currently warded in hospital, most of whom are well and under observation. A total of 16,723 cases – or 77.8 per cent – are undergoing home recovery, while 2,823 cases are in community care facilities, and 438 are in COVID-19 treatment facilities.

There are currently 310 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation and 46 in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Apart from the 207 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Over the last 28 days, of the 63,299 infected cases, 98.6 per cent had no or mild symptoms, 1.1 per cent required oxygen supplementation, 0.1 per cent required ICU care, and 0.2 per cent has died.

Among those who required oxygen supplementation and ICU over the last 28 days, 50.1 per cent were fully vaccinated and 49.9 per cent were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Among those who have died over the same period, 24.8 per cent were fully vaccinated and 75.2 per cent were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

As of Wednesday, about 9.54 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme. Some 4.61 million have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with some 4.55 million having completed the full vaccination regimen.

To date, about 780,000 eligible individuals have been invited to receive their booster doses – 506,552 of them have received their booster shots while another 110,000 have booked their appointments.

Separately, 220,534 doses of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) have been administered as of Wednesday, covering 115,544 individuals.

This means that 84 per cent of the population have completed their full regimen or received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 85 per cent have received at least one dose.
