28-year-old 'time-warp' Mercedes Benz 500 SL up for sale

A leading London classic car retailer is offering for sale a near-perfect R107 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL. This desirable collectible has covered just 956 miles and the car is potentially the best on sale globally at this time. The model was built from 1971 through 1989, and is the second longest single series ever produced by the German manufacturer, after the G-Class.

The car in question is a right-hand-drive UK-supplied car and is one of the last R107 variants produced. With an expected price of around £100,000 ($124,000) the car represents a unique opportunity for a collector.

A two-seat drop head with occasional seating for two in the rear, the car was an immediate success with discerning buyers, thanks in part to its fully lined removable roof which made it usable daily in all climates. The R107 model also made numerous appearances on popular television shows, including a starring role in "Dallas" when it was the regular ride for character Bobby Ewing.

It is astonishing that this car has covered the equivalent of just 34 miles every year over its 28-year life. Described as being in true time-warp condition, this 500 SL has been completely cherished from new with flawless black paint and completely unmarked Cream Beige hide upholstery.

Based on the W114 saloon, but with engines from the larger and more powerful S-Class, the Mercedes Benz 500 SL combined speed, refinement, safety and style, typically over-engineered in famous Mercedes-Benz style.

First registered on in 1989 on November 1, the 500 SL features a 242bhp 5.0-liter V8 engine and has a host of options including cruise control, air conditioning, green-tinted sun-deflecting glass, heated seats and, as mentioned, a separate hard top. It even retains the original tool kit and book pack with two hardtop release handles.

Paul Michaels, chairman of the vendor company, said: "This is an unmissable opportunity for someone to purchase a true collector's item. It is always difficult to find Mercedes of this era with low mileage -- like Porsches they were built to be used daily -- but to find an R107 500 SL with less than 1,000 miles on the clock is just unbelievable. This example is perfect in every way and looks like it has just driven out of a showroom in 1989."

This remarkable Mercedes Benz is currently available to view at Hexagon Classics' showroom in North London, UK.
