It wasn’t too long ago that asking your boss about working from home was considered unthinkable. In fact, your boss probably would have answered that question with a blank stare, laughter, or both. That’s right, there are work-at-home jobs that allow you to look after the precious things in life.
But thanks to technology, it’s much easier to find a job that allows you to work from home. And with the cost of public and private transportation increasing faster than Chinese military spending, working from home is both cost-effective and convenient.

Writer/Online Content Editor/Blogger
Writing is a critical skill that 99% of people are capable of doing, but only about 20% of people actually enjoy doing it (or do it well for that matter). If you’ve got a passion for writing and have the flexibility to cover a broad range of topics, you can definitely land a writing job that doesn’t require you sit at a desk all day.
On the upside, you have the freedom to write from the comfort of your own home without dealing with the horrible morning commute or prison-like offices. On the downside, you really need to stay on top of tight deadlines. Otherwise, you might not be a work-at-home writer for long.
Requirements: Varies, as some jobs might not care about education level, while others will require a degree and several years of working experience. But one requirement most writing jobs have in common is that you should write proficiently in English.
Skills: Varies, as some jobs require content management system (CMS) experience, search engine optimization (SEO) experience, knowledge of a foreign language, etc.

Requirements: Varies, as some employers might require at least a ‘O’ Levels, while others require a degree. However, most jobs require at least 1-2 years of experience and knowledge of HR recruitment processes.
Skills: Varies, but most jobs require knowledge of employment guidelines (compliance), relationship management skills, communication skills (networking), and knowledge of the talent acquisition process.

Virtual Assistant/Admin
Today, more businesses are outsourcing jobs that were once considered “in-house.” Some of the jobs being outsourced are also the least noticeable in the workplace, such as the ever lonely IT guy. Virtual assistants basically do the work of the company admin remotely from home. Depending on the employer, virtual assistants might also handle some sales and client management duties as well. Working From Home Is Great, But BEWARE of Scams!
While working from home can be a huge convenience, you’ve got to be very careful about telling the difference between legitimate jobs and “work-at-home” scams. So before you take the job, make sure you Google the company and intensely scrutinize/avoid any jobs that require the following:
Stuffing envelopes
Assembling crafts, jewelry, or other products (especially job that make you buy the materials!)
Data entry
Translating documents
Currency Trading
Pyramid Schemes (selling some ridiculous product nobody will buy)
Mystery Shopping
That’s not to say that there’s a legitimate work at home job somewhere in all of that BS-sounding job ads, but as the old saying goes, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”
