KOTA KINABALU: Three fishermen reported missing yesterday were found and rescued near Pulau Tiga, about a two-hour boat ride from here.

Sabah Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som said the trio was rescued by a passing tourist boat at about 9pm.

"They were immediately taken to a relative's house at Pulau Gaya for a rest, before being transported to the city at about midnight.

"The fishermen lodged a police report at the district police headquarters, and we have also contacted their family members to get confirmation (on their identities and the incident)," he said.

Following the missing report yesterday, Mohd Zubil said the agency carried out a search and rescue (SAR) operation near Pulau Gaya, Pukau Tiga and Pulau Mengalum.

"We also deployed our aircraft to conduct an aerial search. We spotted their boat, but the fishermen were not on it," he said, adding that the operation ended at 1.15am after all victims were confirmed safe.
