3 police officers injured in north Kosovo ambush

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Kosovo police say three police officers were wounded when unknown gunmen ambushed a border police patrol car in the north of the country, which is controlled by minority Serbs.

Police spokesman, Baki Kelani said the attack happened late Monday near the town of Zvecane, which is manned by Serb members of the Kosovo police. He said the injuries are not life-threatening.

The attack comes as leaders of Kosovo and Serbia try to work out a deal with the help of the European Union to bring the volatile area under the rule of law.

Hardline Serbs in the north reject Pristina's rule and target Serbs working with Kosovo's ethnic Albanians.

Belgrade has agreed to back Serb participation in Kosovo-run organizations but fiercely rejects its former province's 2008 claim to statehood.
