A total of 319 new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections were reported among Singapore residents in the first 10 months of this year, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in a media release Thursday (1 December).

Out of the new cases, 206 that were reported in the first half of the year were analysed by MOH, with sexual intercourse accounting for 94 per cent of them.

About 56 per cent of these cases originated from homosexual transmission, while heterosexual transmission and bisexual transmission accounted for 32 per cent and 5 per cent, respectively.

Out of the 206 cases studied, 194 were men, with nearly half being between 20 and 39 years old.

In 2015, there were 455 cases of HIV infections reported, which translated to a rate of 116.6 people per million.
