'Kurt Cobain Day' declared in singer's hometown

Aberdeen, Washington is set to proclaim February 20 as an annual Kurt Cobain Day in honor of the late Nirvana frontman. The singer was born in Aberdeen on February 20, 1967.

Local radio station KXRO reported the news this week after it was announced by Mayor Bill Simpson.

The proclamation comes as fans prepare to mourn the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death on April 5, 1994.

According to KXRO, the proclamation states, "Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements."

The proclamation is to be read on February 12, according to the report, with specifics about the event (which could be extended over a full week) to follow.

Meanwhile, the neighboring town of Hoquiam, where Cobain lived briefly, recently announced its own day to honor Nirvana. Residents will celebrate on April 10, 2014, the day the band is to be inducted into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame.
