From Town & Country

Now that we're all at home most of the time, many of us are investing in the spaces where we live and work—and, well, do everything else. You've likely already spruced your home office setup or purchased some artwork, but have you thought about your mattress? If you're looking to upgrade your sleep in a serious—and a six-figure—way, a much-sought-after Hästens horsehair mattress might do the trick.

The Swedish brand is the purveyor to the Swedish Royal Court, and has other royal clients around the world. Drake owns a Hästens; so does Swedish model Elsa Hosk. The blue check on a Hästens—which can run upwards of $390,000, though the starting price for a full size is more reasonable $6,995— is a discreet status symbol, as much of signifier that you're "in the club" as an Annabel's matchbox or a Cartier Panthère. But does that price tag really guarantee the best sleep money can buy?

"Sleep is a performance activity, which requires the right skill set. It’s no different to a runner performing better with the best trainers, outfit, and equipment" says Tara Limoges, Hästens New York store manager. "Everything you do, you will do better with quality sleep: your thoughts are clearer and your memory functions at greater capacity. You'll will be physically faster and you will be in an emotionally stable position."

Hästens beds have been made by hand at the same factory in Köping, Sweden since 1852. The Vividus model takes 240 hours to craft, while the Grand Vividus—the model that Drake owns—takes a whopping 600 hours. Horsehair, cotton, flax, and wool are used in each mattress, plus Swedish pine for the frame.

You can only buy a Hästens beds in-store. While walk-ins are welcome, every customer must take a "bed test" before purchasing. "Each bed test begins by taking a few moments with an assigned sleep coach so that they can understand our client's sleeping patterns, their needs in a bed, and previous injuries that may disturb their sleep, all down to what type of pillow they are sleeping on," says Limoges.

After getting to know how your body acts and moves during the night, you are also guided through a “back test” on a yoga mat to see how the muscles in your back and neck tighten and release. Finally, you enter "the sleep spa," where the sleep coach helps you test different beds based on what you've learned. And don't forget the accessories: you can shop for pillows, headboards, robes and slippers, and of course, linens—Hästens recently released a collection of iris-inspired designs by CFDA member Lars Nilson.

Customers can further choose the size, shape (if a bohemian-style round bed is of interest) color, and tension of their mattress. Once you've said selected your bed, Hästens offers something far beyond just traditional delivery: the company has specialists who'll come massage your mattress into the perfect state should it ever get too lumpy to properly perform.

"We want all of our customers to enjoy the bed of their dreams, for the rest of their lives. Our bed massagers help ensure that your bed retains its beauty and delivers great comfort for years to come," says Limoges. Hästens offers a 25 year guarantee, but if you take care of it (regular massages for you, and the mattress, can only be a good thing), it can truly last a lifetime.
