4 Smallest Airports In The World That Are Tinier Than You Could Ever Imagine

Singapore may be a tiny little country but Changi Airport is nowhere near as small as any of the smallest airports in the world. Did you know that our airport has been ranked as the best airport in Asia as well as the best airport in the world?

Anyway, what is the smallest airport you've travelled to when you were travelling around the world? Here, we at GET.com put together this list that comprises some of the world's most itsy-bitsy airports. #1 on this list is especially intriguing while #4 is super nerve-racking in my books!

4 Smallest Airports In The World

1. Rwanda Droneport

Have you ever heard of a droneport? This airport with flying drones hasn't been built yet but it is an interesting and meaningful project that will help better the lives of people in Africa.

The biggest takeaway of the world's tiniest airport is that it isn't meant for human travellers, but instead, its main aim is to create a network that allows medical supplies to be delivered to some of Africa's most inaccessible and deprived spots.

2. Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Nepal

Does it send chills down your spine knowing that the landing strip of the Tenzing-Hillary Airport (previously known as Lukla Airport) is only 450m long and 20m wide, in addition to it being built on the steep slope of a hillside? It is said that the runway incline clocks in a teetering 12%!

Despite being 100% dangerous, this tiny airport remains the gateway to Mount Everest. There is absolutely no room for any error allowed here in this real life-challenging landscape if one is expecting to take off or land safely in one piece. A heartfelt piece of advice? Avoid flying to or from the airport during bad weather at all cost.

3. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Saba, Caribbean Island

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is yet another airport that has one of the world's shortest air strips measuring just about 400m in length. Perched on a rugged mountainous terrain, landing safely on Saba requires some serious manoeuvres that only the maestros from Windward Islands Airways will be able to achieve. This is the only carrier that services the airport, by the way. Windward Islands Airways offers four or more flights daily from St. Maarten to Saba's Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport.

4. Morgantown Municipal Airport, West Virginia, United States

Who would have thought that one of the world's smallest airports is hidden in West Virginia, United States? Morgantown Municipal Airport presently only offers three daily round-trip flights to Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport via Silver Airways, United Airlines' subsidiary airline.

The runway at Morgantown Municipal Airport is only about 800m long, and even though there have been plans to expand the airport, rumour has it that it is unlikely that more airlines and flights will be made available to residents of and travellers to Morgantown. For now, the runway can only accommodate propeller planes used by Silver Airways that have a maximum capacity of 34 people.
