40-Year-Old Ang Mo Kio Blocks To Meet Their End

Blocks 246 to 249 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 2 and 3 in Singapore are scheduled to be knocked down in February next year. The space will be used to build new homes.

The four blocks have been slated for demolition under the HDB's Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (Sers) since June 2006, which is about 10 years ago. This scheme, offers new replacement flats that have been subsidised along with a new 99-year lease to the residents that are affected.

Even after all the residents of the 40-year-old blocks had moved out at the end of 2012 to neighbouring blocks in Avenue 1, the four 12-storey blocks still remain standing and have since been used as rental homes under housing schemes to help needy families.

For example, Blocks 246 and 247 have been used to provide families in need with temporary housing at lower rates under the HDB’s Interim Rental Housing Scheme. These families are housed in the two blocks until they find a more suitable flat.

The other two Blocks, 248 and 249, have been used for families whose flats have yet to be completed under the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme (PPHS).

If these families are not able to find a replacement home for themselves in time before the demolition, they will continue to receive help from the HDB.

There have been mixed feelings from residents who once resided in these blocks; some are okay to see them go, some are okay for them to be demolished.

The four blocks in Ang Mo Kio are not the only ones slated for demolition. Recently there has also been news of the iconic Rochor Centre coming to a close.
