5 Do’s of Daytime Glamour

Put together an outfit that looks effortlessly chic and apt for the occasion.

There are just some women that glide effortlessly through the day looking chic and polished, nary a hair out of place. It’s an especially awesome feat looking perfectly poised in hot and humid climes, when the rest of us mere mortals resemble popsicles melting in the sun. Do you ever ask yourself, how do they do it? Here are some do’s (and don’ts!) of daytime glamour:

1. Do dress appropriately for every occasion.
That means doing your homework—reading the invitation, finding out the dress code, and garbing yourself in the most stylish version of what’s required. When it comes to everyday dressing, simply scope out the situation—is it a board meeting? A parent-teacher conference? Lunch with the girls? Then put together an outfit that looks effortlessly chic and apt for the occasion.

2. Do add your own glam twist.
Once you’re dressed appropriately, kick it up a notch by adding your own glam twist. For example, instead of buttoning down a crisp white polo as usual, knot it at the waist over your Capri pants or a breezy circle skirt. Trade in the standard corporate pumps for pointy killer heels, or add a vintage brooch to a classic wrap dress to put some oomph into a regular outfit. Even just propping oversized shades on top of your head will already add a nonchalantly cool vibe to a simple jeans and tee ensemble.

3. Do wear light, breathable fabrics in cool colors.
There’s nothing more unglamorous than looking uncomfortable. When dressing for the daytime in tropical weather, choose light, fine quality fabrics that allow your skin to breathe (sweat stains under the arm pits are absolute no-nos!). Go for a simple, streamlined look, and wear as few layers as possible. White, earth tones, and light-reflecting pastel shades are your best bets, but rich, bright tones like coral, emerald, and turquoise can be beautifully glam, too. Black is still a fool-proof choice for an instantly pulled together, glam look, but for daytime wear, limit it to certain settings such as air-conditioned offices or special events.

4. Do pay attention to accessories.
Sometimes, a perfectly lovely ensemble can be ruined by the wrong shoes or too many glittery baubles. Learn to wear accessories that complement the style and color of your clothes; when in doubt, flip through fashion magazines to get a feel of what goes well together—no need to be too matchy-matchy! Remember, accessories don’t have to be trendy or carry a designer label—they just have to seamlessly complete your look, or add an unexpected punch to your outfit.

5. Do wear the right fragrance.
Fragrace adds that intangible, sophisticated finishing touch to your outfit. Whether you like to wear a signature fragrance or switch up your scents depending on your outfit and mood, it’s important to wear something light and elegant for the daytime. Heavy, overpowering, headache-inducing scents are total turn-offs. Take note: even when using a light perfume, spray sparingly, concentrating on pulse points for subtle scent that lingers—your secret weapon for understated daytime glam.
