Fall is an exciting time of year if you’re a fan of cooler weather, changing leaves, and holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween. It’s also an exciting time for tech enthusiasts, with some of the biggest brands unveiling their newest models ahead of the holiday season.

Both Apple and Google have announced their latest devices, with the iPhone 12 released on Oct. 23, and Google’s new Pixel 5 (retailing for $799) available as of today. You can also pre-order the new budget-friendly Pixel 4a (5G) for $679 starting today, both of which harness the power of 5G for the ultimate in high-speed connectivity on the go.

I had the chance to get my hands on the new Pixel 5 ahead of today’s launch, and these are the five key features you need to know about Google’s latest cell phone offering.

Need for 5G speed

In case you’re unfamiliar, 5G is the latest in mobile technology that allows for fast download and streaming speeds whether you’re downloading a movie, listening to music, catching up on podcasts or playing a game on the go. When browsing YouTube, YouTube Music and Google Podcasts on the Pixel 5, you can even access the content you want by pre-downloading content via 5G for those times when you don’t have WiFi connectivity.

All-day battery gets an upgrade

Gone are the days when you need to frantically search for a charger or power bank in order to save your dying phone. The Pixel 5 features Adaptive Battery technology, which learns your favourite apps and reduces power to the ones you rarely use, helping your battery last all day long. The newest feature, Extreme Battery Saver, also helps your Pixel last for up to 48 hours when you really need it by automatically limiting active apps to just the essentials and letting you choose the additional apps you want to keep running.

If you have a pair of Google Pixel Buds or other Qi-compatible wireless devices, you’ll also be happy to know that the Pixel 5 can easily share its power. Whether you’re looking to save space on cords or recharge in an emergency, simply flip the Pixel 5 over to access its wireless charging pad and share its charge with your other devices.

Cinematic in a snap

One of the best ways to take advantage of the new Pixel 5 is with its photo capabilities that rival even the highest quality professional cameras. Built-in Night Sight, Portrait Lighting, and Cinematic Pan let you capture virtually any moment, and a new lens lets you take stunning ultrawide shots in addition to your favourite features like Live HDR+ and dual exposure controls.

Worry-free spills

Unlike the Google Pixel 4a and 4a (5G) models, the Pixel 5 features a water-resistant body so you can rest easy when the inevitable spills happen. Made with a matte backing designed in 100 per cent recycled aluminum enclosure, this cell phone is also designed with sustainability in mind. It’s a unique feature that I was personally a big fan of, since the textured back almost felt like paper or stone, and is a welcome departure from the standard glass or aluminum feel of other phones on the market.

Stay connected to loved ones

It’s never been easier to stay in touch with loved ones from afar using the Duo app and Pixel 5. Pixel users can share their screen while video calling friends in Duo to simultaneously co-watch images or videos, while picture-in-picture technology still lets you see your caller while screen sharing. Duo also comes with built-in features like interactive filters and the ability to draw on-screen that the whole family can enjoy.

The Pixel 5 comes in two colours (Sorta Sage and Just Black), and is available to shop now for $799.
