5 reasons why 2015 is the year of the 90s

1. Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky

Those who were around in the 90s will definitely remember the high-profile scandal between former US president Bill Clinton and his then intern Monica Lewinsky from 1995 to 1996.

The affair shook the country’s political scene and the whole world shifted its eyes on his wife Hillary Clinton, who surprisingly, forgave him and kept the family together.

Today, while Hillary busies herself with her presidential campaign, Bill Clinton begins to make more public appearances and Monica Lewinsky makes a comeback.

Lewinsky has been spotted at red carpet events (with the recent one being the Tony Awards), she is a TED speaker and has been featured on Vanity Fair in its June issue.

2. Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson finally releases a new single -- her first since 2008 -- and it’s called “No Sleeep”. The best part about this? Her latest sound will remind you so much of the Janet we know in the early 90s, when she sang “That’s The Way Love Goes” from her 1993 album “Janet.”

3. Overalls

Nostalgics, rejoice: denim dungarees aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Take on summer's soaring temperatures in an abbreviated pair-they'll look good over everything from crop tops to striped shirts to silk button-ups.

Overalls are no longer a 90s thing, it’s a 2015 thing now. Gone were the days when you would only see overalls on pin-ups printed during that decade. These days, you’ll see it on the fashion runways, like at Rebecca Minkoff’s Spring 2015 collection and all over online shops like ASOS.

4. Remake of Final Fantasy

Surprise, surprise for Final Fantasy gamers -- the game's being remade this year. The popular video game, which was released on PlayStation in 1997, will be released on PlayStation 4 this time. However, no release date has been set yet.

5. Jurassic World

The fourth Jurassic Park film has overtaken Fast And Furious 7 in the record books.
The fourth Jurassic Park film has overtaken Fast And Furious 7 in the record books.

And then there’s the shocking return of our favourite dinosaur movie with Jurassic World. The first installment, Jurassic Park, hit the screens in 1993, followed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 and Jurassic Park 3 in 2001.

Just when we thought we would no longer see dinosaurs in the theatres, directors Colin Trevorrow brings the movie franchise back to life.

With that said, it’s not completely the 90s without the Spice Girls, boybands like NSYNC and grunge bands like Nirvana. Gone were the days when MTV played more music videos than reality shows, when Singaporeans used fare cards to take the buses and trains (there was more space too!), and we could watch family sitcoms like Under One Roof and laugh at a young Gurmit Singh and Kumar on the television.

What about the 90s do you want to see happening again?
