ALOR STAR: At least 50 homes in 10 villages here were badly damaged following a thunderstorm yesterday evening.
Most of the houses had their roof blown away. Some houses however, were totally destroyed in the 4pm incident.
No injuries were reported.
A victim in Kampung Alor Teja, Mohammad Tajuddin Abdul Majid, 56, said the roof of his house’s living room was blown away by the storm and landed in a nearby paddy field.
The retired soldier said, during the incident, he was at home with wife and their three children.
"I was preparing for the Asar prayers when the roof started rattling due to strong wind. In just two minutes, the roof above the living room was blown away," he said.
Tajuddin estimated the losses at about RM30,000 as many the house’s electrical items and belongings were damaged following a heavy shower that followed the storm.
Another victim, Munah Sahak, 78, said she is pinning on hopes that the relevant aid agencies would help repair the living room of her century-old home, which is now badly damaged.
She was lucky that she was at neighbour's home when the incident occurred and is now seeking shelter at her child's home in Tandop.
Meanwhile Kota Setar district Welfare Services Department supplied emergency kits, which include basic necessities and blankets, to all 50 families.
Its officer Syahrul Nasir Mat Rais said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is expected to distribute Bantuan Rakyat Kedah (BARAKAH) aid comprising basic necessities and RM500 to each family to ease their burden.
