50 suspected Syiah followers detained in Kota Baru

KOTA BARU: More than 50 people believed to be Syiah followers, including women and children, were detained at a building in Jalan Sri Cemerlang, here, last night.

The operation was conducted by the Kelantan Islamic Affairs and Religious Department (Jaheaik) and police.

Sources said more than 50 people, including women and children, were taking part in a special event that was against Islamic teachings when the operation took place.

They said the Syiah followers had being conducting their activities in the building for several years.

State police chief Datuk Hasanuddin Hassan confirmed police involvement in the operation.

“Police were helping Jhaeaik in terms of security. The others action were taken by the department,” he said.

Efforts to get Jaheaik director Datuk Che Mohd Rahim Jusuh to comment proved futile. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
