Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will deliver his National Day Rally 2016 speech this Sunday evening (21 August) from 6:45pm at the headquarters of the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in Ang Mo Kio.

Held annually since 1966, the rally aims to highlight critical challenges and future plans for Singapore.

Over the years, the rally has been delivered at major landmarks across the island, such as the former National Theatre along River Valley Road (which has since been demolished), Kallang Theatre, the University Cultural Centre at the National University of Singapore, and since 2013 has been held at the ITE headquarters – a striking development designed by Singapore-based RSP Architects Planners & Engineers.

Here are some interesting facts about the ITE campus.

1. Covering an area of about 10.6ha (the size of 10 football fields), the campus opened in January 2013.

2. The $380 million building houses about 10,400 students and 750 administrative staff.

3. There are more than 50 courses available for students in various fields, including business, engineering, design and media, and electronics & infocomm technology.

4. A real aircraft is parked in a hangar at the college. The Boeing 737 is for students of the popular aerospace engineering course to hone their skills.

5. Several shops and restaurants located on-site are open to the public, including an NTUC FairPrice supermarket, Popular Bookstore and Koufu Foodcourt. Other facilities include a Sports and Recreation Centre and Centre for Music & the Arts.

6. A mini-mall on campus is also open to the public. Called ITE Epitome, it is run by students who can showcase their skills and interact with customers, with companies like Far East Flora and Jean Yip.
