SANDAKAN: Marine police here thwarted an attempt by seven Filipinos to illegally enter Sabah via an unregistered speedboat last night.

The group was spotted trying to sneak into Sandakan via Kuala Batu 3 waters at about 9.30pm.

District marine police commanding officer Assistant Superintendent Mazre Che Mahmod said marine personnel on sea patrol duty intercepted the boat and inspected its occupants.

They discovered that five people, including the boatman, did not have valid identity documents.

“The seven are aged between 15 and 52. The boatman is from Pulau Taganak in the southern Philippines, while four passengers are from Bongao.

“(However) two other passengers were found to be holders of a MyPR and a passport, with Lahad Datu as their address,” he said.

Mazre said all passengers were detained immediately for investigation under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
