A Job Happiness survey done by JobStreet.com shows that 45% of Singaporeans are unhappy at work. We often read tips on how to be more productive and efficient, but our mental health and emotional well-being is also very important. There are many factors that contribute to our unhappiness at work, but more often than not, there are actions we can take to help improve our situation, and to make ourselves feel better.

This article will guide you on some tips towards a happier you in the workplace.

1) Create an office nest – Since you spend so much time at work, improve your productivity and happiness by making your space truly your own. Decorate your area with plants and colours true to your personality. This way, you will have a workspace that allows you to be comfortable and relaxed.

2) Make friends – You don’t have to walk alone. Some people like to say, “I’m here to work, not to make friends.” What this does is to place a barrier between yourself and others, preventing you from creating a genuine connection and friendship. Friends are important everywhere, and once you open up and forge bonds with the people you see every day, work will definitely be more fun and satisfying as compared to working alone, or keeping your troubles to yourself. Furthermore, having friends at work can create a support system, camaraderie and a sense of loyalty.

3) Leave your personal problems at home – Learn to separate your personal life, and your work life. We understand, sometimes it’s hard not to get affected at work when you are facing personal troubles. We urge you to try to keep yourself busy and professional at work, so that your work won’t suffer – causing you more stress and unease in a vicious cycle. On top of that, taking your mind off these personal problems might give you a different perspective when you go back to it after your work is done.

4) Smile and don’t forget ‘Thank you’ – Something as simple as smiling can improve your happiness at work as it tells your brain to be happier. Smiling is also contagious; smile and the world smiles with you. Expressing gratitude towards your colleagues makes them feel appreciated, thus contributing to a positive energy in the workplace.

5) Take a breather – It’s easy to get burned out at work. That’s why you need to take a minute and breath before moving onto your next task. Move around from time to time to stretch out your body after long hours hunched over and sitting down. If possible, take some time off and go on a vacation to unwind and recharge.

6) Be organized – Avoid additional stress that comes with clutter and scrambling to find what you need. Having an organized workspace will help you be better prepared and work more efficiently.

7) Reward yourself – Whether it’s by going out to dinner with your significant other, or sweet retail therapy, find the time to reward yourself after you’ve completed a project or a had a fruitful day.

You don’t have to be miserable at the workplace all the time if you find ways to make yourself feel better. Choose happy!
