700,000 new homes by 2030: Govt White Paper

By Romesh Navaratnarajah: To meet the needs of a growing population, the government aims to ensure Singaporeans have affordable and quality housing by 2030, according to its new population White Paper released yesterday.

"Our housing estates will be planned comprehensively to meet the diverse needs of our population, with convenient access to transport, amenities and recreational spaces in a good living environment," noted the report titled A Sustainable Population for a Dynamic Singapore.

To achieve this, enough land will be set aside for an additional 700,000 homes, or more if needed.

Meanwhile, the vibrant development within Punggol will be replicated in new towns such as Bidadari, Tampines North and Tengah, the report said.

There will also be "more housing units in mature estates where there are pockets of housing land available, especially around transport facilities" to provide a wider choice of homes to families and the opportunity to live close to parents as well as amenities.  Housing will also be ramped up in the Central Region for Singaporeans looking to live near their workplaces and the city.

"Besides providing housing in a variety of locations, we will also ensure a range of housing options to suit the needs of families, young couples, elderly and singles. All existing HDB estates have been enhanced with basic barrier-free accessibility. This will also be the case with all new HDB estates, amenities and facilities."

The white paper noted that Singapore's population will hit 6.9 million by 2030. Romesh Navaratnarajah, Senior Editor of PropertyGuru, wrote this story.
