MANILA, Philippines — Government troops and Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members had an encounter in Barangay Cabcaban, Sumisip, Basilan.
Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay said the 4th Special Forces Battalions were conducting patrols when the encounter took place.
Eight were killed and 11 were injured on the side of the armed forces.
Seven of them were members of the Civilian Active Auxiliary Force (CAFGU) while one was a member of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team.
Among those injured were two officials, four enlisted personnel and five civilian active auxiliary.
Authorities are still determining the number of casualties on the ASG side.
“It definitely does not mean that just because CAFGU has casualties, they are not capable of fighting. They had guns same as with regulars members, “said Capt. Petinglay
Eight of the injured are being treated at camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City. Three others are recuperating in a hospital in Basilan.
Financial assistance for families of slain government soldiers is currently being processed.
