8 Side-Hustles You Can Do with a Full-Time Job

Clara finishes work at her office job and changes into her mermaid outfit. She’s been making money on the side as an entertainer for years now. Dressed as a mermaid, she entertains at functions and children’s parties in what began as a hobby but now earns her a decent extra salary.

The idea of the side-hustle is nothing new, we’ve all heard of hard-working individuals juggling two or even three jobs to make ends meet. But something about the Millennial hustle is different.

It involves taking something you love, a hobby or a project and turning it into a money-earner that you can do in addition to your regular job. Many side-hustlers admit to being more focused and productive in their full-time job as a result of the passion and fun they have in their side-gig.

The most important thing when taking on a side-gig is to manage your time. Be sure to leave both jobs at the door and give yourself adequate free time to rest and recover. Find small ways to make yourself more time efficient, such as checking your emails during your commute or brainstorming ideas when you’re in the gym. Set yourself weekly goals and stick to them. But most importantly, if your side-gig is something you love, it won’t feel like work.

So what are some of the side-hustles that Singaporean Millennials are pulling today? Let’s take a look.

1. Writing

If you’ve got a way with words, becoming a part-time writer can be a great way to earn some extra money whilst indulging your passion.

From writing for an ad agency or website to starting your own blog, there are many ways to make money from your writing. The best way to start is to build a portfolio of low paid work or start your own website as a place to publish what you are writing. Write every single day and pitch ideas to potential clients with confidence. You never know where it might lead!

2. Photography

If you have a decent DSLR and an eye for a good photo, having a part-time photography hustle is a great way to enjoy some creativity in your life whilst making some money.

As well as selling your photos to stock image websites, where you’ll earn a commission when others download your work, you could also sell your photos to blogs and magazines. Or why not start your own photography website. Covering a specific niche such as food or fashion, you can earn money from advertising as more people visit your website.

3. Personal Shopper

If you know about style and love to shop, why not get paid to help other people out.

For the time-poor, money-rich Singaporean, hiring someone to do their shopping for them is a great investment. You need to prove that you can understand your clients’ personal style and come back with bags of goodies they will love. But in return, you get paid to do what you do best.

Thanks to late night shopping in most of Singapore’s malls, this job can be easily planned around your full-time work.

4. Camp Instructor

If you love kids and the great outdoors and don’t mind spending weekends away, becoming a camp instructor is a very fulfilling side-gig.

You’ll spend weekends hanging out with kids, organising fun activities and games for them as well as ensuring their safety. Developing young minds and broadening their horizons, you could be getting paid to have fun in nature!

If you’re an energetic person who wants an escape from a steady office job, this could be the side-hustle for you.

5. Translator

As the world gets smaller and businesses expand into overseas territories, there is a greater need for translation services.

As a freelance translator, you choose your own hours and have the opportunity to use your language skills to earn some extra cash. Upwork is a great place to start out, and once you have a few good reviews you can begin to charge more for your services.

If you love language and are a stickler for spelling and grammar, this side-hustle is the ideal way to flex your linguistic muscles and earn good money for doing so.

6. Private Tutor

Perhaps you’re a skilled violinist, you’re amazing at French or you know your way around a calculator, ambitious parents are always looking for tutors to help shape their children’s young minds or prepare them for gruelling exams.

You’ll need to prove your skills with qualifications, and experience helps, but there are few more rewarding ways to earn a decent side-hustle than helping young kids succeed. With plenty of patience and a knack for explaining difficult things, your side hustle is sure to become an enjoyable hobby.

7. Selling Crafts

If you’re creative and love spending your weekends making greetings cards, jewellery or pottery, you could be making a great side-salary by selling your products on Etsy.

The commission on the site is remarkably low at just 3.5%, so before you know it you could be making money doing what you love.

8. Dog Walker

For those who love animals, a dog walking business is a great way to earn an extra income. If you pick up a few regulars and can walk them after work or during the weekend, you could earn a decent salary whilst enjoying the company of some cute pooches. A great way to relax in nature away from the stressful work environment.

However, you decide to embark on your side-hustle, be sure that you don’t overwork yourself. Otherwise, your performance both in your full-time and part-time roles will suffer. Make time to see friends, relax and get enough sleep to retain the energy to enjoy life to the full.
