This is what an $800K Mercedes looks like inside

SINGAPORE — Maybach is back. The luxury limousine brand, owned by Mercedes-Benz’ parent company Daimler AG, makes a return to the super-luxury limo business with the newly-announced Mercedes-Maybach S-Class models.

The flagship Mercedes-Maybach S 600 costs $800,888 with COE, with a less powerful S 500 version available. Pricing for that has yet to be confirmed. Or maybe Mercedes doesn’t wish to embarrass potential owners with its cheapness.

The Maybach brand — named for legendary engineer Wilhelm Maybach — was previously represented by the Maybach 57 and Maybach 62, both also based on the S-Class (the previous W221 model). But slow sales forced the cessation of production and the Maybach brand was shelved in 2013.

This time around, the Mercedes-Maybach is more unapologetically based on the current Mercedes S-Class, but it costs about half what the defunct Maybach models used to sell for (or not sell for).

At 5,453mm long and with a wheelbase of 3,365mm, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is 20cm larger in both dimensions than the long wheelbase variant of the S-Class limo.

The rear door has no triangular window because it has been relocated into the C-pillar, and as a result, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cutout. Mercedes says that improves privacy for occupants.

The stretched dimensions mean an increase in head- and knee-room in the rear, naturally.

The front passenger seat can be folded forward and the rear seat place in an extended recline position for quick breaks.

The second row is fitted with executive seats that have a maximum backrest angle of 43.5 degrees, adjustable backrest, calf and heel support, and extra cushioning as standard. The rear seat occupant on the front-passenger side has 77mm more footroom compared with a normal front passenger seat in the furthest forward seat position, too.

Unless you have freakishly long legs, in other words, you’re not likely to feel cramped back there.

The rear armrests come with cup holders, stowage space and wood trim. The centre console hides two tables that can be easily folded in or out with just one hand, and is equipped with thermo cup holders that use Peltier technology. As an option, the “Rear Seat Comfort” package includes individually adjustable multicontour seats with massage function.

According to Daimler, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven.

That hasn’t prevented them from making it a bit of a muscle car, however. Both versions of the Mercedes-Maybach can hit 100km/h from standstill in five seconds flat.

Despite the sound of screeching rear tyres, Mercedes claims that this is the world’s quietest production saloon car in the back.

After all, luxury limos, like children, should be seen and not heard.
