MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) launched an operation against an armed group in Inabanga, Bohol, Tuesday morning.

Based on a statement made by the AFP Central Command and Police Regional Office-7, the government forces have been monitoring the entry of suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group into the Visayas region on board a sea vessel.

The encounter took place at past 5:00 a.m. in Inabanga, Bohol.

Civilians present during the incident looked for somewhere to hide.

At 1:00 p.m. several high-caliber firearms were recovered. Five bodies on the side of the armed group were also found.

Three members of the military and one police officer were also killed in the encounter.

Col. Medel Aguilar, Centcom assistant chief of the Unified Command staff for Civil Military Operations said, “That part of Bohol means that they don’t have that support in that area, and this is a very good example that we can defend ourselves. We can protect our communities from terrorism if only all of us will join the campaign of joint forces.”

Authorities are now conducting clearing operations in the area.

Centcom assured they will continue conducting operations against groups who spark violence.

“But we will always make sure that we are putting the right security forces. As of now we are pouring in more security personnel to make sure that the threat is eliminated,” said Col. Aguilar. — Gladys Toabi | UNTV News & Rescue
