9 of Singapore’s best superheroes
So Deadpool is coming to town, and everyone’s going gaga over him, since he’s the anti-hero who’s also kind of a hero but sometimes also a villain and yet also a bit good – who can keep all that straight? But how about our own homegrown superheroes? Did you know that Singapore has its very own superheroes that could feasibly form our very own Justice S-League?
It’s not just one, two, or even seven superheroes- we have nine, yes, nine superheroes that could fend off the likes of Ultron or Loki! So here’s a look at 9 Singapore superheroes that we grew up with.
1. VR Man

Probably the most famous (or infamous) of Singapore superheroes, he was portrayed by James Lye and had a memorable, all-black costume that kind of looks like a black Green Lantern (although not a Black Lantern, that’s something else altogether). His powers were vaguely defined so that he could do anything the show required (including making it rain by nosebleeding). And there’s even a Facebook page for VR Man lying around!
We’ll always remember VR Man, for better or for worse.
2, 3 & 4. Rotiman, Kayaman & Guyuwoman

Written by Johnny Lau, the same guy who wrote the Mr Kiasu series, this was his foray into the superhero comics in A5 English format! There was only one book in the series though, but the food-related names were more than enough to make us sit up and take notice. Notably, it’s this book that taught me that guyu meant butter in Hokkien, and that anthropomorphic butter would take the form of a long-haired bomb shell.
5 & 6. Captain Contractor & Plumber Boy

Captain Contractor & Plumber Boy started off as the in-universe comic that the Phua brothers read in Phua Chu Kang… until the day they did one entire episode featuring the adventures of the fictional hero (in a fictional universe, so meta!). The entire Phua Chu Kang cast dressed up in bright coloured spandex to play the various over the top superhero roles.

7 & 8. Flash Fry & Steam Marinate

Once upon a time, McDonald’s sold fried chicken that was steam marinated first, then flash fried! Along with their really awesome fried chicken (it was just drumsticks and thighs if I remember correctly), they had two mascots, the red Flash Fry and the purple Steam Marinate! Along the way, Flash Fry’s name got changed to Fast Fry (legend has it that this was due to copyright issues with another red speedster), but they suddenly disappeared one Thursday morning, along with that awesome fried chicken.
But if I ever want to cook fried chicken, I’ll remember to steam marinate it first, then flash fry it.
9. HDTV Guy

And perhaps the newest but no less memorable of Singapore’s superheroes is HDTV Guy! As the rap here goes, his super powers consist of internal systems integration and a bunch of acronyms (HRFIS, PMP to iTrax), but we’re really more amazed by how he’s practically wearing Superman’s costume, just with a different logo.

Still, nothing beats seeing a hero on the big screen, which is what we’ll be getting when Deadpool hits cinemas this February! This wisecracking, fast healing mercenary gets tangled up with all sorts of supervillains and even a pair of X-Men in his second (and much better foray) into cinema.
