KUALA LUMPUR: The government has detained almost 1,000 people under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 or Sosma since it was enforced, the Parliament was told today.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said between July 31, 2012 and Feb 22, this year, a total of 979 people have been detained under the Act.
"The offences involving security are stated in the First Timetable of the Act," he said in a written reply to Ahmad Baihaki Atiqullah (Pas-Kubang Kerian).
Baihaki had asked the number of people who had been detained and charged and the type of their offences, after the Act was passed by the Parliament.
Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the Act was a law against offences related to security and was enacted to maintain public order and safety.
"This is clear that Sosma is a law on procedures and the type of offences involve security matters." he said.
