How aCommerce, Blanja, and Pinjam maintain employee retention

Maintaining employee retention involves structured talent development programme, open communications, and giving both challenges and appreciation

Employees are a valuable asset for a company, and maintaining employee retention is something that every leader should pay attention to. But there will be no point in providing employees with lavish facilities if there is no clear work division. There is also point in giving flexibility without considering other forms of benefits.

So, what are the things that startup founders need to pay attention in making sure that their employees are happy?

Make a structurised talent development programme

According to aCommerce CEO Hadi Kuncoro, the company aims to maintain employee retention by focussing on building a corporate culture that is imbued with the “hybrid startup” spirit. It is implemented through structurised talent development programme for all levels in the company.

To make sure that employees continue to feel happy working at aCommerce, the company routinely conducts mentoring and counselling activities, while also involving employees of all divisions in leadership training. The goal of the programme is to maintain high work satisfactory rate.

In terms of performance review, Kuncoro says, the company implements a strong performance management standard. For employees with the best performance, there will be opportunities to move to next level.

“In communicating, we also implement a one-on-one session for all stages. This is crucial in maintaining good relationship between employees and their managers,” he explains.

Do open communications

Blanja CEO Aulia E. Marinto explains that he tries to maintain open and constructive communication with the team. He opens access for employees to reach out to him, anytime they need to.

He also opens up room for errors in creating a new solution and making the best business decisions, as well as uses bottom-to-top approach in innovating and implementing an idea.

“These are some fo the concrete steps that we do to make sure that the best talents feel happy, comfortable, and have a strong sense of belonging towards Blanja,” Marinto says.

The other solution is to give competitive remuneration, comfortable work spaces, and facilitate internal activities such as sports and arts day. The goal is to build a solid team, and to maintain work-life balance.

What founders should avoid in maintaining employee retention rate, according to Marinto, is making unclear decision on business direction and company strategy. This might make employees feel uncomfortable.

Give challenges and appreciation

According to Pinjam CEO and Co-Founder Teguh B. Ariwibowo, the best employees love working on new things as an opportunity for them to learn and be appreciated. In order to maintain employee’s happiness, he believes that founders should give them challenges through their designation and responsibility.

Pinjam does it by giving projects to the best performing employees. Once they managed to answer the given challenges, they will be given a personal token of appreciation.

“We have this habit in Pinjam where we would take two to three of the most outstanding performers in business and tech division. I am going to prepare a present for them. Other form of appreciation is by announcing their performance in town hall meetings,” Ariwibowo says.

As for things that founders should avoid is being unprofessional such responding to organisational changes too quickly. Because when it comes to dealing with organisation, structure, or man power, the decision has to be made carefully.
