ACRES founder Louis Ng joins PAP

Animal rights activist Louis Ng has joined the People’s Action Party (PAP).

Ng announced in a Facebook post on Monday that he is currently serving in the Kembangan-Chai Chee constituency under Marine Parade GRC and will be working under Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin.

Ng, 36, said his decision to join a political party was one he had given “serious thought for some time”. The founder of the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society Singapore (ACRES) said he had “seen that things can change when we work from within”, adding that he had worked with government agencies and Members of Parliament before in promoting his cause.

Citing his work with Law Minister K Shanmugam in establishing pilot programmes for the keeping of cats as pets in flats and ending the culling stray cats in Chong Pang, Ng wrote that these collaborations had helped make a “significant difference for the community as well as advance animal welfare”.

"On a wider and national scale, the annual Chong Pang Animal Protection Forums resulted in momentous animal protection policy changes in Singapore. The increased penalties for animal cruelty offences that will be discussed in Parliament next month is one of the best examples of our success," he wrote.

He also highlighted his plans to work in the community in other ways besides championing animal welfare.

"Although I started out focusing on animal welfare, and will continue to do so, I have come to realise the impact that we can make on many fronts. I’m keen on also working on projects focusing on bringing back the kampong spirit and helping to break the poverty cycle in the less fortunate families,” he wrote.
