DFA Acting Secretary Enrique Manalo
Foreign affairs Acting Secretary Enrique Manalo discussed on Friday the priorities of the department under his administration.
Manalo has enumerated what he believes are the urgent interests of the country. First among these is the effective governance of the country’s maritime domain.
“The Philippines is an archipelagic nation, and its progress is connected in its waterways. This affects our nation’s security and defense posture. Effective governance runs the government from securing the nation’s territory to effectively policing our waterways and ensuring the health of our marine resources,” he said.
Apart from this, the Acting Secretary said it is important to secure the nation’s critical infrastructures including transportation, power, banking and military from external threats.
He reiterated that the welfare of the Filipinos in and out of the country must be ensured.
Manalo added that educational opportunities and technologies should be sought to build the nation’s capacities which will help create jobs in the country.
Manalo also discussed the importance of maintaining friendly ties among other countries.
When asked about the issue concerning President Rodrigo Duterte’s granting of permission to China to conduct research on Benham Rise, he replied, “No, I don’t know about this. I just read about that in the papers. What I’m sure is that China has reaffirmed that the Philippines has sovereign rights over the Benham Rise… and the President has in fact given instruction to patrol in the Benham Rise area.” — Leslie Longboen | UNTV News & Rescue
