Yahoo Life spoke with the JB-Singaporean actor on what drives him and what he chooses to spend time on during his downtime.
Yahoo Life: What is one sport, fitness or wellness trend you love, and how did you get started?
Skateboarding! It started when I was shooting Story of the Yanxi Palace. Xu Kai and Hong Yao were already into skateboarding, and they introduced it to me. So I bought my first skateboard and started skateboarding with them in between scenes.
What are the benefits of skateboarding, and what do you love?
It's a very intense and cardio-heavy workout without you noticing it because it’s fun and doesn’t feel like an exercise!
How often do you indulge in it, and with whom?
I usually bring my skateboard into production and skate whenever I have no scenes. It's my only form of cardio. Nowadays, I do it alone as you might not find a fellow actor who skateboards as well in the production.
Was there any point you wanted to give up? Why? How did you bounce back?
Not really. But there was a time when I did not touch my skateboard as I was just too exhausted from filming. I would return to the sport in a heartbeat.
What are your go-to shoes or outfits when skating?
Besides a skateboard, a T-shirt and shorts are my usual skating get-up. Sneakers from Skechers are my go-to for their supreme comfort! You can injure your sole if you wear a pair of poorly constructed shoes or one with thin soles. The sole plays a considerable part in the skateboard's ability to steer well.
Please share one thing you learnt from this sport and what you wish others to discover about it.
Skateboarding is an excellent workout! You sweat a lot and burn tons of calories. Get on it already!
As a celebrity, many people look up to you. So what is one way you inject positivity to the public?
As much as we want to present authenticity to the public, I do think about how the things I post will influence and impact my audiences. I read a wide range of books from comics to autobiography to novels etc., depending on my mood and time, and share them on my IG from time to time. I also love reading picture books and children’s books. My favourite is The Little Prince, and I have the book in various languages and editions. But that said, I don't think it's possible to feel positive all the time. It's ok to feel down and negative at times.
