Adam Levine protests 'The Voice' results: 'I don't know how we got to this point'
Well, Tuesday must have been Opposite Day.
Why? Because on Monday’s top 11 episode of The Voice, DeAndre Nico gave a knee/jaw/panty-dropping, 1993 BET Awards-worthy performance of Jodeci’s sexxxy slow jam “Cry for You.” He was easily one of the best two contestants of the night. But on Tuesday, DeAndre somehow ended up in the bottom two.
DeAndre’s coach, the always outspoken Adam Levine, was not pleased.
“I’ve got to ask everybody this question,” Adam shouted to the booing, protesting studio audience. “Does it feel right for this guy to go home? I’m really, really shocked that he is even being considered as one of the bottom, because I think he is one of the top. And I think this dude deserves to go all the way. He deserves to be in the finale. I don’t know how we got to this point.”
To backtrack, this is the amazing Monday performance that got DeAndre in the bottom two. The mind boggles.
Anyway, realizing that doing a steamy makeout track hadn’t helped him Monday, DeAndre wisely reversed course for his Instant Save song, doing “Take Me to the King” by gospel artist Tamela Mann. (Many other Voice contestants have done well with religious songs, including this season’s Kymberli Joye, who was this week’s highest iTunes charter, at No. 7, with “Break Every Chain.”) But DeAndre’s performance was just as powerful, if less steamy, as “Cry for You.” His admirer Jennifer Hudson was throwing her shoes — the ultimate J.Hud Productions compliment — and shouting, “That’s how you win! You sing with a purpose and every single word. I could feel it. You meant that. I think you sang your way to deserve to stay in this competition, honey. You sure got my vote.”
DeAndre’s Instant Save opponent this Tuesday was Comeback Stage underdog Lynnea Moorer. Honestly, she did not deserve to be in the bottom two either, based on her elegant, silky-throated take on Camila Cabello’s “Consequences” on Monday. But considering the controversial way she fast-tracked into the Live Playoffs, her days were always numbered on this show — and her Instant Save performance Tuesday of Ariana Grande’s “Tattooed Heart” was a nerve-wracked, pitchy mess that led to her doom. She ultimately clinched only 19 percent of the live Twitter vote.
Oh well. At least it’s a testament to Lynnea’s talent that she was the lone survivor of last week’s three-way Instant Save singoff. Top 11 isn’t too shabby for someone who didn’t even turn a single chair during the Blind Auditions.
So DeAndre is safe for now, but his coach Adam’s claim that he will “bring this guy all the way to the finale” seems pretty far-fetched at this point. Cry for DeAndre, indeed.
Still, this season is an unpredictable one, given the fact that iTunes downloads no longer count as votes (streams on Apple Music count as votes instead), which renders the iTunes chart no longer a reliable barometer of results. True, DeAndre and Lynnea were among the lowest iTunes charters of this week, but Carson Daly announced that Team Adam’s Reagan Strange was this week’s top streamer — while she actually stalled at No. 98 on iTunes (behind Kymberli, Kennedy Holmes, Chevel Shepherd, Chris Kroeze, MaKenzie Thomas, and Kirk Jay). Reagan was the No. 1 Apple Music streamer last week too, but anything could happen between now and the multi-elimination bloodbath coming in just a couple of weeks. Watch this space.
